Analysis · what the averages hide

Three Abnormalities in Sarasota's Numbers

Sarasota scores in the top tier of US counties on overall health. But the same workbook contains three patterns that the county average conceals. Every underlined figure opens the source measure.

1. A wealth gap between those who own and those who work

A Sarasota household at the 80th income percentile earns ; one at the 20th earns $36,470 — a ratio of 4.2 to 1. With of residents 65 or older — roughly double the national share — much of the county's income arrives as retirement and investment income, while the people who staff its hospitals, schools, and restaurants compete for housing against that wealth.

The squeeze shows up exactly where you'd predict: — worse than 88.7% of all US counties and rank 48 of 67 in Florida — and childcare for two children consumes (rank 48 of 67 in Florida). A county this wealthy sitting in the bottom ninth of the nation on housing burden is the single most abnormal pairing in the workbook.

2. Two different counties, depending on your race

Sarasota's is in the top 7% of US counties — for the county as a whole. Broken out by race: white residents 80.0 years, Black residents 72.8 years — a gap of 7.2 years inside one county.

The gap starts at birth. — more than four times higher. , and .

It continues through life: Black median household income is ; ; preventable hospital stays — the classic marker of blocked access to primary care — run ; and the Black homicide rate is . Behind all of it sits — rank 61 of 67 in Florida, meaning only six Florida counties are more segregated.

3. A healthy county where care is hard to reach

Despite ranking near the top nationally on health outcomes, — worse than 76.8% of US counties — and fare worse still (80th percentile from the bottom). The county's excellent averages are carried by an older, insured, affluent population; the working-age families underneath them face insurance and cost barriers more typical of a far poorer county. That is the same population hit by the housing and childcare burdens above — three measures, one story.

The Complete Workbook, Measure by Measure

All 89 measures, organized exactly the way County Health Rankings organizes them. FL rank is Sarasota's position among Florida counties reporting that measure (1 = best). US percentile is the share of all US counties Sarasota outperforms. Green is strong, red is weak, and demographics are descriptive (no better or worse).

Sources & How the Data Was Interpreted

Everything on this page comes from one document: 2025 County Health Rankings Data - v4.xlsx (2025 Annual Data Release), published by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute — County Health Rankings & Roadmaps with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The workbook aggregates federal statistical sources — CDC WONDER mortality files, the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, CMS Medicare claims, HUD housing data, and others — and each measure's specific source and data years are shown in its detail popup, exactly as the publisher documents them.

Florida ranks were computed from the workbook's data for all 67 Florida counties; national percentiles were computed across every US county reporting each measure (up to 3,159 counties). Rank direction follows the publisher's definition of each measure — for example, rank 1 in Preventable Hospital Stays means the lowest rate. Confidence intervals are shown where the publisher provides them; small subgroups can have wide intervals, and the popup shows them so you can judge precision yourself.

The full source workbook is retained for follow-up questions — for example, which counties rank ahead of Sarasota on any measure.
