Sarasota County · Crime, Enforcement & What Safety Costs

A Safe County — and What Residents Pay for It

Sarasota County is genuinely safe: the Sheriff's Office reports it as the 3rd safest among Florida counties with populations over 250,000 (2024).[2] This page puts the numbers on the table — what crime actually occurs here, what enforcement costs each resident, and what the county collects back in citations and court fees. Every figure is footnoted; per-resident figures are computed from a 470,000 population estimate and labeled as computed.

I. What Crime Actually Happens Here

In 2024, law enforcement in Sarasota County reported 349 violent crimes — including 9 murders — and 2,962 property crimes.[1] Dividing by population, that works out to roughly 74.3 violent and 630.2 property crimes per 100,000 residents (computed) — a combined index of about 704.5 per 100,000, versus a Florida county average of roughly 1,028.[6] By that yardstick, Sarasota's crime rate runs at about two-thirds of the average Florida county's.

II. What Enforcement Costs Each Resident

The Sheriff's Office is the county's single largest operating unit. Its budget rose from $198,520,000 in FY2025 to a proposed $225,500,000 for FY2026 — a 12% increase in one year, with personnel costs making up 73% of the total.[2] Spread across the county's population, the FY2026 budget works out to roughly $480 per resident per year (computed).

Two facts complicate any simple "too much" or "too little" reading. Staffing is lean: 1.2 deputies per 1,000 residents is one of the lowest ratios in Florida. And in the Sheriff's own regional comparison, Sarasota spends less per capita than every neighboring county:[2]

III. Tickets, Fines & What the County Collects Back

In FY2024, the Clerk of Court processed 47,348 traffic infractions and collected $10,746,793 in fines, forfeitures, court costs, and service charges across all case types.[3] That collection figure works out to roughly $23 per resident per year (computed) — small next to the tax bill, but real money flowing from residents to the courthouse.

A note on what this page does not yet break out: agency-level counts of speeding and DUI citations sit in the FLHSMV uniform traffic citation database,[4] and arrest-level detail (including DUI arrests and petty-theft charges) sits in FDLE's incident-based system.[6] Both are public records. As those extractions are completed and verified, they will be added here rather than estimated now — this site does not publish numbers it cannot cite.
